Google Now, Google's digital assistant for Android devices, has received a new alarm feature that can reportedly alert users to get off public transports at the stop closest to their destinations.
The alarm does not work with the standard alarm built into Android, according to Digital Journal. The standard alarm is available through the Clock app.
The feature is instead controlled by Google Now.
The addition to Google Now is designed to prevent people from missing their stops after falling asleep on buses or subway trains, sometimes due to long nights of partying, Daily Digest reported.
Users will have the option to set an alarm that will go off when they are close to their departure points for home or work, PC Magazine reported.
"The alarm knows where and approximately when you should exit - just tap it, and it will alert you before you get there, overcoming the drinking you did earlier in the evening (or previous evening) and saving you a missed stop," Michael Crider from Android Police stated.
Because the feature is limited and only shows up for users when they open Google Now, it is unclear as to how the feature works, Mobile Burn reported.
The abilities of the alarms imply that they are not based on location, but rather on time.
The app also has the ability to work out approximately when the user should arrive at the stop. This ability is meant to provide accuracy for the alarms, Digital Journal reported.
The feature will not be available for everyone, since Google Now is not available for all public transit systems in all of the countries where the app is available.
