BMW announced Friday that it will be adding the second generation of its X6 sports activity coupe to dealer showrooms later this year.
The X6 was first launched in 2008, and has reached global sales of close to 250,000 units to date, according to The Bangkok Post.
Because of the success of the first-gen model of the vehicle, the German automaker has kept the design of the second-gen model relatively similar to its predecessors. One change in the design is the "X" line on the front end. The side profile that extends to the rear, however, remains the same.
The X6 is ranked third in sales, behind the X3 and X5 sports activity vehicles, Island Packet reported.
Kenn Sparks, spokesman for BMW of North America, said the vehicle "was created as a niche vehicle and has been extremely successful in its appeal to a select crowd."
The 2015 X6 will be offered in three different versions - the X6 xDrive35i, the X6 xDrive50i, and the X6 sDrive35i. The first two are all-wheel drive models. The first-gen X6 was only offered as the X6 xDrive35i and the X6 xDrive50i, The Car Connection reported.
The new X6 sDrive35i and X6 xDrive35i come with BMW's 300-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged in-line six engine, which has an eight-speed automatic transmission. The X6 xDrive50i has been improved with a 445 hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine.
BMW said the V8 adds 45 hp and can speed up from 0-60 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds, which is 0.4 seconds faster than its earlier version, Island Packet reported.
Two trim levels, xLine and M Sport, are offered for the new X6. All models of the car will include 19-inch wheels. Consumers will also have the option of 20-inch wheels, The Car Connection reported.
The car's interior design has a wide, fixed infotainment screen and a large gauge cluster pod, similar to the interior of the X5.
BMW said the 2015 model will be available in six colors. These colors include new variants Coral Red and Cognac, Island Packet reported.
The company said it will announce pricing for the car closer to its release.
