Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith reportedly had marital "issues for a long time" before deciding to get divorced, according to Us Weekly.
After 18 years together, Griffith filed for divorce from Antonio Banderas on Friday and cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. A source told the publication that either Griffith or Banderas cheated on one another, but the couple "had fallen out of love awhile ago."
"We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost 20-year marriage in a loving and friendly manner honoring and respecting each other, our family, and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together," the pair said in a joint statement.
Us Weekly reported that the decision to divorce was amicable and that the couple continues to keep in contact.
An official date of when the couple started living their separate lives was not reported, however a source said the two have been drifting apart for years and that the divorce comes as no surprise - adding that the "fights and separations got to be too much."
Banderas and Griffith married in 1996 and have one daughter together, 17-year-old Stella Banderas. Source told Us Weekly that "their daughter Stella is about to be 18 in September and they wanted to wait until (the) kids were grown and out of the house before they split up, but knew they would a while ago."
Another source explained: "There's been an arrangement in their marriage for some time to stay together despite their problems, because of the children and his Catholic religious beliefs. They have worked hard to keep this split as amicable as possible."
Griffith, 56 - who has son Alexander, 29, and daughter Dakota, 24, from previous relationships - is asking for spousal support, child support, and sole physical and joint custody of their daughter.
This will be Griffith's fourth divorce and Banderas' second. Banderas was also previously married to actress Ana Leza, but they never had children together.
