Sony Corp. announced at the E3 press conference Monday that its set-top box PlayStation TV is making its way to the U.S. and Canada this fall.
Formerly known as the PlayStation Vita TV, the device launched in Japan last year, according to CNET.
The PlayStation TV, which lets gamers connect to any television in their homes, will ship later this year for $99. Users can play PlayStation 4 games on any other television despite their console not being connected to another set.
The device is also available in a $139 bundle, TechCrunch reported. The bundle comes with a DualShock controller, a memory card for storing downloaded games, and a copy of the Lego Movie video game.
The console will work with a variety of games that are currently available on the PlayStation Vita. The Vita is Sony's portable game console. Customers can download these games on the PlayStation store.
Sony said PlayStation TV being able to play most PlayStation Vita games builds a connection between the device and the television, CNET reported. The device will also work with older games that were available on older PlayStation models. Customers will be able to play more than 1,000 games when the device is released.
The PlayStation TV will be competing with other popular set-top boxes upon its release, which include Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV. While Sony is focusing mostly on gaming with the device, users are also expected to be able to stream video entertainment content from Hulu and other services.
Sony's other developments include the open beta of its cloud-based PlayStation Now service, which will be released on July 31, Fox News reported. The service lets users stream classic games from the company's older consoles onto the PS4, the Vita, Xperia cellphones, Bravia TVs and other more recent devices.
The company is holding a demonstration at E3 of its virtual reality headset Project Morpheus. It will be at least another year before the headset is available to consumers.
