New Species Of Wolf Snake Discovered In Cambodian Mountain Range After Decade-Long Search (PHOTOS)

Several strange and wonderful creatures can be found in the dense forests of Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains, UK MailOnline reported.

A new species of wolf snake, dubbed on the appearance of its powerful, backwards-facing fangs, is the latest creature to be discovered.

Despite a decade-long research effort to find new species in the area, the snake's unusual colors have helped it remain hidden, scientists claim.

While most wolf snake species are known to be a light shade of brown with white marks, some others have been identified as dark purple-tinted with brown skin.

The latest species, named Lycodon zoosvictoriae, is light brown with darker brown markers.

"The species will probably prove to be endemic to the Cardamom Mountains," said herpetologist Neang Thy, who both discovered and described the new species.

According to UK MailOnline, wolf snakes are nonvenomous, but have been known to defend themselves when trapped, and can cause severe damage to skin with their sharp fangs.

By inserting their powerful fangs deep into the hard scales of their prey, the snakes mostly feed on lizards and sometimes frogs.

Females, often breeding before the monsoons and laying an average of four to 11 eggs, can be much larger than male species.

Eggs are reported to hatch in the span of three months, with the hatchlings ranging between five and seven inches (14-19 cm) long. After being fully grown, wolf snakes are thought to reach around 20 inches (50 cm) in length.

"This discovery is the eighth new snake to be found in the Cardamom Mountains since survey work began in 2000 by Zoos Victoria in Melbourne and Fauna and Flora International," UK MailOnline reported.

"The Cardamom Mountain range runs across the southern part of Cambodia, from the Thai border in the west, almost to the Vietnamese border in the east. Most of it is forested, and areas of it remain unexplored by scientists."

The latest discovery proves how much more remains to be discovered in this region of Cambodia, researchers said.
