Amazon Kindle: Online Retailer Adds Audible and Switching Features to E-Reader

Amazon's new Kindle e-book software update enables consumers to comprehend text visually or through audio.

According to a press release, the online retailer's Whispersync For Voice app allows users to read a book on the company's Kindle device or listen to the content via their Audible app. Readers can simultaneously switch back and forth between the compatibilities with the actual words still displayed on the book's pages. The apps work with Kindle for Android and Apple's iOS operating system.

Amazon's Kindle senior vice president said the internet company wants to help consumers enjoy reading anyway they can.

"We're working hard to help customers find more moments each day to enjoy a great book," Russ Grandinetti said in a statement. "Integrating professional narration into our Kindle apps means you never have to put down a favorite book-start reading at home, get in the car and simply tap a button to continue listening without losing your place."

Audible's founder and CEO said some of Amazon's Whispersync users' lives changed when they tried the program.

"We continue to hear from a growing number of Whispersync for Voice converts who tell us the innovation has profoundly changed the way they read-in fact, switching back and forth between reading and listening has become their preferred way of experiencing stories," Donald Katz said in a statement. "And the feature has gotten easier and easier to use, as this exciting integration into Kindle apps attests."

Consumers can download the technology's latest version from the Apple Appstore, Amazon Appstore for Android, or Google Play. More information is available on the Kindle apps section of Amazon's website.

Amazon Kindle has over 45,000 kindle books. These include famous bestsellers from many types of paperbacks, according to the press release. The company produced set-top box Fire TV. The gadget goes for $99.
