Zeta-Jones Bipolar Treatment Ends Early, Actress Returns Home

Catherine Zeta-Jones has finished up treatment for bipolar disorder and was released Tuesday, after checking herself into treatment in late April.

Her husband, actor Michael Douglas, said the actress "proactively" submitted herself to a mental health facility, reported the Huffington Post.

She was to complete a 30-day program beginning April 29, but completed her treatment ahead of schedule.

"She comes home tomorrow," Douglas told People magazine during the Cannes Film Festival, Monday, where he was working on promotion for his film, "Behind the Candelabra," with co-star Matt Damon. "She's doing a really good job of getting balanced. I'm proud of her."

He even joked that she had "got herself worked out with her meds and she's raring to go!" to Extra.

The 43-year-old Oscar award winning actress first began seeking treatment in April 2011 for her bipolar II disorder, which is characterized by manic episodes, as well as severe depression.

She opened up to People magazine about her bipolar, saying that it was a disorder "that affects millions of people."

"I am one of them," she said. "If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it...there is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help."

She also said that being honest about her condition wasn't easy.

"I'm not the kind of person who likes to shout out my personal issues from the rooftops, but with my bipolar becoming public, I hope fellow sufferers will know it's completely controllable," she told InStyle magazine for its December 2012 issue. "I hope I can help remove any stigma attached to it, and that those who don't have it under control will seek help with all that is available to treat it."
