Sega’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” will hit the big screen with the help of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet.
Sony announced on Tuesday the film would be a live-action film mixed with CGI, according to Entertainment Weekly. Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, the masterminds behind the upcoming live-action Jetson films, will pen the film’s script. The “22 Jump Street” producer Neil Moritz has also joined the production.
“There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before,” Hannah Minghella, Columbia Pictures’ president of production said in a statement.
The film does not have an official release date nor a set cast, but Doctor Eggman will be the villain in the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Sonic the Hedgehog” has Sega’s billion-dollar franchise and its gaming titles have sold more than 140 million copies in the past 20 years.
“Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we’re thrilled that he’s now coming to the big screen,” Marza Animation Planet CEO Masanao Maeda said in a statement. “Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we’re confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him.”
