"Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta" star Stevie J was arrested for not paying child support.
TMZ reported that the 40-year-old reality star was arrested Wednesday in Atlanta, Georgia for owing $1,107,412 in unpaid child support. In 1991, the Grammy winning producer was ordered to pay $6,600 a month in child support to his ex-girlfriend, Carol Bennet, with whom he had two children in 1997 and 1998.
The amount later increased to $8,500. According to court papers obtained by TMZ, Stevie J stopped paying child support in 2001 - over time the amount accumulated to over a million dollars.
Bennet's representative stated, "Under the 1992 Child Support Recovery Act, it is a crime to leave a state owing more than $10,000 in unpaid child support arrears for more than 2 years. Mr. Jordan owed more than 20 times that when he left New York to live in the state of Georgia."
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said Stevie J, whose real name is Steven Jordan, earns over $27,000 monthly. Stevie J denied rumors that he had any financial issues and claimed that Bennet just wanted her 15 minutes of fame.
"We were in Philly just hanging out with my kids. I had a show in Philly. We chillin,' we at the mall with the kids. Me, wife, even baby momma was there, Ms. Bennett. But you know it's all good. But then I see I owe a million and some change!" Stevie J told MadameNoire. "It's like everybody want their day in the sun, everybody wants to be hot."
If he's convicted, Stevie J could spend a maximum of two years in jail.
