George R.R. Martin knows the HBO's adaptation of "Game of Thrones" is straying further away from his "A Song of Fire and Ice" novels.
In an interview with The New York Times, Martin explained he wished the show had more than 10 episodes a season. Martin claims the story lines would be much better if they had more time to develop on screen.
"With 13 episodes, we could include smaller scenes that we had to cut, scenes that make the story deeper and richer," Martin told the Times.
The best-selling author added the changes made early on are now snowballing in the newer seasons. According to the Times, the musician Marillion, from Season 1, had his tongue removed on King Joffrey's order and was sent away. In the novels, Marillion is blamed for Lord Petyr Baelish's murder of Lysa Arryn.
"So that has to be changed...The butterfly effects are accumulating," Martin said.
Martin may not have a say in the episode lengths, but he does have input on set costumes. The author told the Times he makes suggestions about to help fit his vision. However, he had to compromise on the Iron Throne, which was far more frightening than seen on the show.
"It's not the Iron Throne I see when I'm working on 'THE WINDS OF WINTER.' It's not the Iron Throne I want my readers to see," Martin wrote on his official blog. The way the throne is described in the books ... HUGE, hulking, black and twisted, with the steep iron stairs in front, the high seat from which the king looks DOWN on everyone in the court ... my throne is a hunched beast looming over the throne room, ugly and assymetric ... The HBO throne is none of those things."
"Game of Thrones" season four finale will air on June 15 at 9 p.m.
