Google is celebrating the biggest sports festival, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, by displaying an interactive doodle on its homepage.
It is the FIFA World Cup and the world knows it already, but Google is not letting any internet user miss the staging of the twentieth global football extravaganza. The world's biggest internet search company has designed a doodle to best match the biggest sports occasion. The FIFA World Cup 2014 kicks off Thursday, in Brazil and runs through July 13, 2014.
The FIFA World Cup is arguably the most awaited sports tournament in the world. Played once in four years, this tournament brings together the best football countries in the world with Spain entering the game to defend its World Cup title. Early predictions have it that Germany may win the Cup this year, though many fans are also betting on the host country, Brazil. Other than these, Argentina, Spain and Netherlands are some teams to watch out for.
The Google Doodle honoring the beloved game of millions of people around the world is an interactive illustration. First it shows Google's logo and a play button on top of it. Click the round play button and a football comes bouncing and halts in the center of the screen. Then the letters come alive and the view of Rio de Janeiro opens up in the background. Golden sands, palm trees, cable cars and the Sugar Loaf Mountain are depicted in the doodle.
As the background view opens up, the letters start to jump in excitement. The cable cars are seen making the rounds up and down from the city's Sugar Loaf Mountain and the statue of Christ the Redeemer is seen on top of a hill.
The first day of the match is scheduled to take place in the Arena Corinthians, Sao Paulo, at 5:00 p.m. local time, between Brazil and Croatia. For the season schedule, click here.
The first World Cup was won by Uruguay in 1930 and Brazil has won the title five times in the past, in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. Spain won the last World Cup, which was held in 2010.
