Daughter Accused Of Ransacking Father's Grave To Search For His 'Real Will'

A New Hampshire businessman's grave was ransacked by three people, including his daughter, in search of his "real will," the Associated Press reported.

The accused party ended up only finding a pack of cigarettes in the dead man's hand.

In 2004, Eddie Nash died of a heart attack at the age of 68. The businessman's cement vault at the Colebrook Village Cemetery was found cracked last month, with the casket opened and his remains searched through.

The body, however, was left intact.

According to the AP, an arrest affidavit names Ginette Dowse, of Clarkesville, 71; Michael Day, of Columbia, 37; and Nash's daughter, Melanie Lynch, of Merrimack, 52, who also goes by Melanie Nash.

"We think whoever came up here had a false premise, and when they discovered what was in here, they were not at all happy with what they found," Colebrook Police Chief Stephen Cass told WMUR.

Lynch had made comments about her father being buried with "the real will," a police affidavit said.

On the night of May 11, Dowse gave the other two a ride to the cemetery, the affidavit said. Lynch and Day dug up the grave and destroyed the concrete vault and metal casket, she told the police.

Dowse said when she returned several hours later to pick them up, Lynch told her she found nothing and "it was not as bad as she thought it was going to be," according to the affidavit.

Cass called the case a "tragedy."

"It's just a tragedy, and I can't imagine the mindset it would take to do something like this," he told WMUR.

Day, who was arrested Tuesday, was jailed on charges of interference with a cemetery and criminal mischief. He's scheduled for a probable cause hearing June 19. His lawyer didn't immediately return a phone call seeking comment Thursday.

It was not immediately known whether Dowse and Lynch, who are out on bail, had lawyers. They filed paperwork seeking public defenders, the AP reported.

A heavy equipment business was started by Nash in 1979, which is still being run by his family. He's been reburied at a cost of several thousand dollars.
