Philadelphia looks to complete a sweep of San Diego on Thursday. The Phillies won their second game of the three-game series on Wednesday after Phillies third baseman Reid Brignac hit a three-run walk-off homer in the ninth, giving Philadelphia a 3-0 win.
"It's what you play the game for, it's what you dream of as a kid," Brignac told the Associated Press. "... It feels great to come through for my teammates. Cole (Hamels) pitched great."
Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels shutout San Diego through his eight innings pitched, in which he gave up only five hits while striking out 11 batters.
"I feel like I've really been able to execute start to finish," said Hamels, who's allowed only one earned run in his last three starts. "I'm not giving in when I get behind in counts, not overdoing it. I'm able to make good pitches and getting good results."
Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick (1-6, 4.30 ERA) starts on Thursday. He's still looking for his second win of the season after losing Thursday's 4-2 loss at Washington, where he allowed four earned runs on six hits.
Opposing Kendrick will be Padres pitcher Eric Stults (2-7, 5.68). The left-hander has struggled in his last four starts, posting an 8.53 ERA, according to the Associated Press. He gave up a season-high six runs on eight hits in Sunday's 6-0 loss to Washington, pushing his tally to 10 earned runs over the last two games.
