A Colorado teenager was able to fend off her attacker by stabbing him with his own knife after he tried to kidnap her, RTV reported.
The 16-year-old victim, who did not know her attacker, accepted a ride from him while walking to a bus stop in the Edgewater suburbs on Wednesday evening, the Edgewater Police Department told the station.
The suspect, said to be driving a dark-colored diesel truck, asked the girl for directions to a nearby lake before offering her a ride home at around 7:30 p.m., CBS Denver reported.
The two were almost at the girl's home when the suspect drove into an ally, took out a knife and bound the teenager's hands with rope, RTV reported. He then drove around with the victim for nearly an hour before ending up on Interstate 225 in Aurora.
Unable to get the attention of other drivers, the girl freed one hand from the rope, seized the knife and plunged it into her kidnapper's left shoulder and chest. The man stopped the vehicle, allowing the girl to flee to a nearby residence. Police were alerted to the kidnapping at around 10 p.m.
"She kept her cool, which is tough to do in a situation like that," Police Chief John Hough said according to CBS Denver. "She had a plan and she carried that plan out. She basically saved herself from a much more serious incident."
The victim was taken to a hospital where she received treatment for cuts to her hand she sustained when she stabbed her attacker.
Police are now searching for the girl's attacker, described as a black man in his 30s or 40s with a beard and has either short or no hair on his head. He was wearing a brown or green shirt with white stripes and dark pants, according to CBS Denver.
