"Bridesmaids" screenwriters Kristen Wiig and Amy Mumolo are reuniting for a new comedy.
The New York Times reported that Wiig and Mumolo are teaming up to write, produce and star a comedy for TriStar Productions. The as-yet-untitled comedy will mark Mumolo's first time starring in a leading role and Wiig's directorial debut.
Although details of the script were not divulged, the plot is described as "best friends who find themselves in over their heads [in the town of Vista Del Mar] and out of their depths, which were, perhaps, not too deep to begin with."
"We're very excited to be writing. We will be going into a cave for months to finish," read a statement from the two women, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "An actual cave. We found one that's nice and big. We're putting a couch in there."
The "Saturday Night Live" alum also called this the "perfect first project."
"Kristen and Annie assured me that the film will be a searing and depressing drama, which is what the world needs right now," Thomas E. Rothman, TriStar Productions chairman said when asked about the film's tone. "Perhaps more to the point, these two supremely talented ladies are always ahead of the comedy curve and as we at TriStar push for originality, we are lucky as hell to be in business with them. The chance to hopefully make Kristen's first film as a director is the cherry on top."
Wiig and Mumolo earned a best original screenplay Oscar nomination for their work on the comedy "Bridesmaids," starring Ellie Kemper, Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Maya Rudolph and Wiig herself.
"Bridesmaids" grossed $288 million worldwide, with a film budget of just $32.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo stats. Both actresses have made clear they are not interested in writing a "Bridesmaids" sequel.
