Portugal defender Pepe was shown off with a red card on Monday for head butting German midfielder Thomas Muller in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup.
With Portugal down 2-0 in the 38th minute, Pepe and Muller jockeyed for possession of the ball. The fight for positioning resulted with Pepe's hand striking the face of Muller, who sold the hit and fell to the ground. Pepe apparently didn't like Muller's exaggeration of the contact: The Portugal star went over to Muller, who was sitting on the pitch clutching his jaw, and head butted him.
The head butt earned Pepe a straight red card, which sent him off for the remainder of the match. The red card also means Pepe will be unavailable on Sunday when Portugal plays the United States.
As pointed out by Eurosport, Pepe could be sidelined for even longer: the mandatory one-game ban for receiving a red card is usually extended in cases where a player is sent off for committing a violent play.
Germany went on to win the match, 4-0. Muller scored a hat trick in the rout with goals in the 12th, 46th and 78th minutes.
