Pinterest Updates Places Pins to Improve Search Experience

Pinterest announced Friday that it has updated its Place Pins feature to provide a better search experience for its users.

Place Pins, first launched last November, include addresses, phone numbers of other information from Foursquare, according to PC Magazine. The feature makes it easier for users to get directions and other information without having to leave Pinterest.

Place Pins can be collected on special boards, where all of users' pins are shown on a map.

"The newest feature is a faster, smarter search for Web and iOS that makes it easier to add a Place Pin to the map," Jon Parise, engineer for Pinterest, wrote in a blog post Friday.

Pinterest has come out with small updates since its introduction of Place Pins. These updates include the addition of thumbnails of the place image on maps and letting users filter searches by Place Boards, Search Engine Journal reported.

Before the update, users had to fill out two fields when performing searches for Place Pins. The first field was for the place's name, and the second was for the city it was located in.

The company discovered that users would frequently type both the place and the city in the same field, Search Engine Journal reported.

A "one-box place search interface" has been released to make the searching process simpler, according to PC Magazine.

Pinterest currently has over one billion travel pins. The company covers over 300 countries and territories. More than four million Place Boards have been created by users.

"Even with the growth in usage of Place Pins, we knew we needed to make the place search experience more intuitive," Parise said.

The update is currently available in the Pinterest's new iOS app, as well as on the Web. The new place search will also soon be available in the Android app.
