Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup are returning to the small screen.

Cartoon Network announced Monday that "The Powerpuff Girls" are returning for new adventures, 10 years after ending their series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The animated series centered on pint-sized superheroes Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, who use their superpowers to defend their home town of Townsville.

"The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide," Rob Sorcher, chief content officer of Cartoon Network, said in a statement. "We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X."

"The Powerpuff Girls" aired 78 episodes, running from 1998 to 2005 and earned two Emmy Awards. Cartoon Network aired a 10th anniversary special in 2009 and a CGI TV movie, "The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed", in January.

Pete Yoder, vice president of consumer products for Cartoon Network Enterprises, North America added, "As the original ambassador of 'girl power,' the Powerpuff Girls brand continues to resonate with people of all ages and there is tremendous excitement around introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation. With proven success and great content plans in place, there's so much potential that we're looking forward to explore with our licensing partners in the coming weeks."

"Powerpuff Girls," was created by Craig McCracken and became one of Cartoon Network's top-grossing brands, with more than $2.5 billion in retail sales, according to THR. New episodes of "The Powerpuff Girls" will return to the cable network in 2016.

Several other animated series including a sequel to "The Lion King" and "The Magic School Bus" are also being revived.
