E-Book Service Oyster Now Available on Android, Kindle Fire and Nook HD

Oyster, often referred to as "the Netflix of e-books", has been launched for Android devices, Kindle Fire from Amazon and the Barnes & Noble Nook HD.

The service has a collection of 500,000 titles, and titles are always being added, according to PC Magazine.

The Oyster app features control font, brightness, night/day modes, and other usual options. The app also has an action bar, as well as a Google-style search box on the main screen.

The team behind the startup has been looking into an app for Android since its launch of the iPhone app. However, the team hasn't started to develop the app until earlier this year, Mashable reported.

"The biggest thing for us is to maintain that really high level of user experience in the reader when you're designing for a platform that has several thousand different screen sizes," said Willem Van Lancker, co-founder of Oyster. "It's important to think about sizing and margins and typography."

Oyster users can go to the company's library and read as many books as they want, GeekWire reported. Users must pay a subscription fee of $9.95 per month.

Users can find titles from Steven King, Anthony Bourdain, Neil Gaiman and other authors in the library.

Oyster also provides books from HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and other major publishers, CNET reported.

The service also includes a children's section that features titles from Disney Publishing and other companies that produce kid-friendly books.

Several feature updates are included in Oyster's new release, GeekWire reported. Different themes in the reader have been improved, and another high-contrast theme designed for reading on the beach has also been added.

Oyster has also improved the boo detail pages, which include a short synopsis of the title and user ratings. Editors' notes about the book are included in popular titles. The book detail pages also include an approximate reading time, which is based on how long it took other people to finish the book.
