New York is looking to avoid a three-game sweep as they head into Wednesday's game. The Mets (31-40) have struggled on both sides of the plate, managing to score only four runs to the Cardinals' 11 runs over the last two games.
An error in the sixth inning by Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy resulted in two unearned runs by the Cardinals and put the game out of reach for New York. Solo homers from infielders David Wright and Lucas Duda provided the only scoring for the Mets, who've won just three of their last 10 games.
"There's many sleepless nights," Wright told the Associated Press. "I won't lie and say it's easy or it doesn't bother me, but you have to understand there's not too many players, if any, that can go through a whole season and ride that roller-coaster ride a little bit."
New York turns to pitcher Bartolo Colon (6-5, 4.15 ERA) to limit the Cardinals' offense and help the Mets prevent getting whitewashed in the series. The veteran right-hander has been one of the few bright spots for New York over the team's recent slide, posting a 4-0 record with a 1.78 ERA over his last five starts, according to the Associated Press.
Colon is coming off a 6-2 win on Friday against San Diego, whom he limited to just two earned runs.
"He was able to throw a sinker to both sides of the plate," Mets catcher Taylor Teagarden told the team website. "Really established his four-seamer fastballs, kind of elevating on guys and throwing it over their barrel and kept them off balance. Weak contact, quick innings."
Cardinals pitcher Lance Lynn (7-4, 3.16) is scheduled to oppose Colon.
