eBay Inc. added a new app on Tuesday called eBay Valet to its Sell For Me service.
The app is designed to sell things for the user, according to TechCrunch. It is capable of determining the item's value, listing it online and shipping it out when sold.
eBay is promoting on its Sell For Me website how the service can sell different items for consumers, such as electronics, shoes, handlebags, collectibles, musical instrumental, sporting goods and automotive parts. However, the service will not sell items that weigh more than 25 pounds, are worth less than $40, high-end valuables, and media like CDS and DVDs.
Users of eBay Valet will get 70 percent of the money once the item is sold, The Next Web reported. Merchandise that isn't sold will either be returned to the user or recycled.
Users take a picture of what they are trying to sell and add a description of the item(s). The company has "valets", or employees who vet the items for sales, research listings on eBay and figure out the best way to sell the stuff. These valets give users a valuation quote that can be accepted or declined. The company then sends the user a shipping label or a free prepaid box for the user to send off the item.
There are several standards that eBay's valets have to meet, such as being able to list 100,000 eBay listings each month and posting items across all eBay categories. They must also have ample storage capacity - enough to hold items received at a minimum of 21 calendar days - be physically present in all major metropolitan hubs in the U.S., and be able to reach Top Rated Seller status on eBay within 90 days of starting Valet services.
"Even though you're not selling the item, there's still an experience of selling," said Steve Yankovich, vice president of Innovation and New Ventures at eBay, TechCrunch reported. "You get to experience the listing but do none of the work."
The Israel Innovation Center, a Tel Aviv-based group in Innovation and News Venture, is responsible for designing the app, Business Insider reported.
eBay said eBay Valet is currently only a "pilot" program.
