Colombia easily dispatched Greece in their group-stage opener, 3-0. A score in the fifth minute from Pablo Armero drew first blood, and goals from Teofilo Gutierrez and James Rodriguez cemented the lead.
"It is a dream come true for me," Colombia boss Jose Pekerman said after the win, via IB Times. "We wanted to be focused, play inspiring football with good skills. My players met all the objectives we had set out and that is very positive for going forward in this competition.
"This is how we planned this match. Some things turned out the way we wanted, some things didn't, but we were extremely focused and showed that we are here to play a good World Cup."
Ivory Coast also won their opener after overcoming an early 1-0 deficit against Japan. Scores from Wilfried Bony and Gervinho earned a 2-1 result, putting the Ivory Coast in second place behind Colombia because of a 3-2 goal differential.
The winner of Thursday's bout would comfortably sit atop the group standings and secure a spot in the second round, a fact not lost on Ivory Coast boss Sabri Lamouchi.
"I want to highlight the fact that we are going to play only the eighth World Cup finals match in our history," he said. "We know that we will not have a lot of space and we will definitely have to win the battle in the midfield to impose our game. We will have to fight a bit more and be technically stronger."
