Nokia Releases Z Launcher as Android Home Screen Replacement

Nokia Oyj released a pre-beta version of its Z Launcher for Android users on Thursday.

The Android app launcher serves as a replacement for the Android home screen, according to Liliputing. The app learns from how consumers use their phones and provides access to their most used apps depending on different factors, such as the time of day.

Users can sign up at the Z Launcher website to try out the pre-release beta version.

Z Launcher functions differently from other Android home replacements in how it helps users access their apps. A small icon at the bottom of the main screen shows a list of all of the user's apps. Users can also get to the app faster by drawing a letter on the home screen, which brings up apps and content that begin with that letter, Greenbot reported.

Because Z Launcher is currently only available in a pre-beta form, it lacks several features found in most home replacement applications, such as flexibility.

The pre-beta version of Z Launcher is designed to work with phones, but not with tablets, Liliputing reported.

The app also doesn't officially work on rooted devices.

Z Launcher also remembers the content that the user accesses most often. Whenever a person uses the "Scribble" feature, the app will bring the content up. For example, when a user draws a "T", the first result could be Twitter, BGR reported.

Users can also scribble letters on the screen to perform searches on the Web.

Z Launcher's website stated that official support is only available with the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy S5 Greenbot reported.

Official support is also available for the Nexus 5.
