Netherlands qualified for the knockout round after defeating Australia on Saturday, 3-2. The close win followed Holland's jaw-dropping 5-1 rout of Spain in the opener, setting up the opportunity for the squad to play in the next round and keep their dream alive of winning the nation's first World Cup.
"Yes, it was tough," Netherlands star Robin Van Persie told FIFA.com of the win against Australia," "but welcome to the World Cup! This is the biggest tournament in the world, with the very best players, so you know you will have a hard time. That was the case against Australia, and it will also be the case next week and the week after that.
"As I said, this is the World Cup. But the main thing is that we are through. I don't think anyone expected that [after just two matches] and it's a very nice situation for us to be in."
Van Persie, who's scored three goals so far, will be sidelined for Monday's match after being sent off with his second booking of the tournament, which he received against Australia.
Chile also secured a spot in the knockout round by winning their first two matches: a 3-1 win against Australia and a 2-0 win against Spain. Although both teams qualified for the next round, neither team wants to play Brazil in the Round of 16; the loser of Monday's match would likely have to play Brazil in the next round.
The availability of Chile's Arturo Vidal and Charles Aranguiz, both of who are dealing with injuries, for Monday is uncertain.
