Nintendo Co. announced on its official website that gamers will be able to play titles from the Nintendo 64 console on the Wii U Virtual Console.
Before the announcement, only games from the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) consoles were playable on the online gaming platform, according to Tech Times.
The Japanese company said during its release of the Wii U Virtual Console almost a year and a half ago that it was looking to transfer games from its older consoles to the new console.
Nintendo urged fans in a post on the Wii U Virtual Console site to check back regularly for future additions of games from N64, Digital Spy reported.
"Check back regularly for the latest releases, including the future addition of titles from the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 64 systems," the company wrote.
Titles from Game Boy Advance have also been recently sold on the Wii U Virtual. The company also recently pledged to have Wii U support for the GamePad.
Nintendo also will be bringing new features to classic games downloaded to the Wii U Virtual Console from the Nintendo eShop. Company officials announced that these features will take advantage of the console's hardware. An official Miiverse community will also be available for each classic to provide players with a place to talk about the game. Controller buttons may be customized for the Wii U Virtual Console; gamers can soon save their game at any time while playing, then come back and pick up wherever they left off through Restore Points, Tech Times reported.
Gamers can buy titles from the Nintendo eShop for the Wii U Virtual Console to start playing immediately. Wii users who own Wii Virtual downloads have the option to transfer their games to their consoles for free and can play them with Wii Mode.
Players can also upgrade the games from the Wii Virtual Console to the Wii U version with a special discount that will allow the game to use the Wiii U's updated specifications, Tech Times reported.
NES games upgraded from the Wii Virtual Console will be priced at $1.00, rather than the usual cost of $4.99 to $5.99. Upgraded SNES games will be available for $1.50, rather than $7.99 to $8.99.
