Yahoo Takes On Android Homescreen With Aviate App Launcher

Yahoo has put its Aviate acquisition to use by introducing a new app launcher for Android smartphones that simplifies accessing important information at all times.

Yahoo, the renowned web search company, is taking on the lucrative mobile market by introducing a new mobile launcher called Aviate. The new app is a result of Yahoo's acquisition of Aviate earlier this year when CEO Marissa Mayer discussed her plans for a transition to the mobile sector.

"Yahoo Aviate simplifies everything about your phone. It starts with a clean, new layout and apps automatically organized for you," Yahoo's product manager, Mark Daiss wrote in a Tumblr post, Monday. "But it's not just about making your phone simpler - Aviate also makes your phone smarter by offering intelligent information throughout your day. Whether you're on the go, at work, at a restaurant or just relaxing at home, Aviate automatically shows you apps and information that are useful to you based on what you're up to."

Aviate, an independent startup before Yahoo's takeover has expertise in automatically organizing apps on users' home screen. Building on the same idea, Yahoo jumped at the first chance to get a stronger foothold in mobile contextual search.

Aviate Android app adjusts the smartphone to the owner's time of the day and the place. For instance, the app will automatically display the events for the day and the weather when you wake up or display fitness apps when walking into a gym. The app was in closed beta, but it appears Yahoo put some finishing touches and launched the app with a revamped looks and a slew of new features.

Touted as a smart launcher for Android phones, Aviate helps users prepare for the day with weather alerts if it is different from the previous day. In office, the app will connect to conference calls with a single tap and send emails to co-workers with ease. The app will also show transit estimates by taking traffic updates from default Maps on the phone.

Yahoo also notes that Aviate can track sleep and show how many hours the user slept, which was added in the app's first update. News headlines, overview of the calendar and other important information will be shown to the user based on the time of the day.

The Favorites section, which can be accessed by swiping up from the home screen, makes it easy to make calls and send emails and text messages.

The full version of the app is available for download from Google Play Store for free.
