Satellite company Globalstar is now releasing a new service called Sat-Fi, a Wi-Fi hotspot that provides smooth wireless connectivity.
Unlike traditional Wi-Fi hotspots, the device doesn't provide limitless access to the Web and media streams, but is able to support SMS, email and voices calls for up to eight connected devices at the same time, according to Engadget.
Sat-Fi is currently priced at $999 and offers data rates of 9.6 Kbps. The device has Wi-Fi support that includes 802.11 b/g/n at a range of up to 100 feet, which depends on the band, Techzone360 reported.
A tiny antenna, with three options for pole or magnetic mounted, is needed for satellite connectivity. Globalstar's new device can be charged with AC or DC power, with the addition of a 12v DC car adapter.
Sat-Fi provides mobile satellite data speeds four times faster than competing devices, as well as clear voice communications. The service can also be set up easily within minutes. Subscribers will be able to use their smartphones, tablets and laptops to make voice calls and send email and text messages with help from a smartphone app that lets devices with Wi-Fi connect to the gadget, MarketWatch reported.
"Although we live in a connected world, there are billions of people who work, play and live in remote locations lacking reliable and affordable voice and data communications. Globalstar's Sat-Fi technology will allow government users and subscribers including oil and gas, marine, natural resource and emergency response to use their own device to stay connected when cellular coverage is not available," said Jay Monroe, Chairman and CEO of Globalstar. "Customers can rely on Sat-Fi to maintain reliable connectivity and peace of mind even when off the grid."
Per-minute rates for the device are priced at $1, Engadget reported.
Sat-Fi also offers subscribers a variety of monthly plans. The plans range from $40 for 40 minutes to $150 for unlimited service.
