Leapfrog Introduces LeapPad3 and LeapPad Ultra XDi Tablets

Leapfrog Enterprises announced Tuesday that it has launched two new tablets, the LeapPad3 and the LeapPad Ultra XDi.

The LeapPad3 is an updated version of the LeapPad2, while the LeapPad Ultra XDi is an updated version of the LeapPad Ultra, according to PC Magazine.

Leapfrog makes toys that aim to educate children, and these two new tablets are the most recent additions to the company's line of learning tablets.

The LeapPad2 has a 5-inch screen with 480 x 272 resolution, 4GB of memory, 2-megapixel front and back cameras, and 480p video recording. The device is also available with 10 apps that are said to be worth $70. The Ultra XDi has a 7-inch screen with 1,024 x 600 resolution and a memory of 8GB, Twice reported.

Kids will be able to use both tablets to access Leapfrog's Learning Library of apps, videos, e-books, games and music. Both devices include a search engine called LeapSearch, which is powered by Zui, designed to provide web browsing that is safe and appropriate for children who can't read yet.

The Wi-Fi capability, dubbed "Web-safe Wi-Fi" gives parents the ability to access Leap Connect so they can download apps. Special impact zones are built into the devices to provide insulation and protection. Leapfrog said that drop-tests, impact-tests, and compression-tests were held for the tablets at the company's Quality Lab to make sure kids could play with the devices safely and continuously. The screens are built to be shatter-safe, which means if the glass breaks, none of the sharp pieces will come out, PC Magazine reported.

The LeapPad3 also includes a rechargeable battery that lasts six hours after being charged only once. The LeapPad Ultra XDi gives users access to hundreds of apps to download.

Peer-to-peer chat in both devices lets kids have conversations with other users in multi-user game play, Twice reported.

The Leap Pad3 will be on sale for $99.99, and the LeapPad Ultra XDi will be on sale for $129.

Both tablets are aimed toward children between 3 and 9 years old, and come in either green or pink. Customers will be able to pre-order LeapPad3 on July 16th, and the device will be available online and in stores in August. Consumers will be able to buy the LeapPad Ultra XDi online and in stores in the fall.
