A Nigerian pop singer set social media ablaze when she offered her virginity to Boko Haram in exchange for the release of over 200 abducted schoolgirls, the Independent reported.
Adokiye, a 23-year-old musician and actress, declared she would give her virginity to the Islamist group if they returned the schoolgirls they kidnapped from a boarding school in the Borno state. Since then an international outcry has ensued and several campaigns have demanded the girls be returned. But for Adokyie, more needs to be done.
"It is just unfair. They are too young. I wish I could offer myself in exchange," the pop singer told the Nigerian outlet Vanguard last week, according to the Independent.
"They are between 12 and 15 years old for Christ sake. I am older and more experienced. Even if 10 to 12 men have to take me every night, I don't care. Just release these girls and let them go back to their parents," said Adokiye, who is from the Imo state.
Some expressed disgust for Adokiye's statements, calling it a cheap publicity stunt.
"Adokiye is really hungry for attention and in the process insulting the world's call to Boko Haram to #BringBackOurGirls," Ludo Gideon tweeted Wednesday.
"We can't afford to loose another girl again to Boko haram," @Winijay_U tweeted.
But fans of Adokiye, who is also a UN Ambassador of Peace, lauded the pop singer for her courage.
"I support you that much, I stand by you im ready to loose my life to get them back too...I feel like screaming," @raymondodanga tweeted.
"Respect for what you're tryna do to bring those girls home," @lovingthecrewe tweeted.
Social media campaigns including #BringBackOurGirls have placed widespread pressure on the militants to free the captives. But the girls remain missing and the kidnappings persist, including the recent abduction of over 60 girls and 31 boys by suspected militants from villages in northern Nigeria, according to the Independent.
