Residents of 18 Mississippi counties received ultra-fast Internet access on their mobile devices Friday, after AT&T added more municipalities to its 4G long-term evolution network.
AT&T's Project Velocity IP three-year investment plan is part of the company's initiative to provide customers with more high-speed Internet, mobile app access, and cloud-based services, according to company officials. Announced in 2012, the mobile carrier's push aimed to install macro cell sites, small cell components and Distributed Antenna Systems throughout the United States to increase the network's density before 2016.
Attala, Grenada, Leflore, Chickasaw, Holmes, Monroe, Choctaw, and Itawamba are among some of the Mississippi Counties now included in the network. Neshoba, Clarke, Kemper, Pontotoc, Covington, Lafayette, Simpson, Franklin, Lauderdale, Union also can use the increased capacity.
"Our goal is for our customers to have an extraordinary experience, and they'll be able to download, upload, stream and game faster than ever before on our 4G LTE network," said Mayo Flynt, president of AT&T Mississippi. "As part of Mississippi communities throughout the state, we're always looking for new opportunities to provide enhanced coverage, and our investment in the local wireless network is another way we're accomplishing that."
"As we work to create a better Mississippi, we will see even more private investment flow to our state," added Phillip Gunn, Mississippi Speaker of the House. "Mississippi's future economy will in part be based on our willingness to embrace technology and innovation that will benefit residents around the state."
"Our 4G LTE service was recognized as having faster average download and upload speeds than any of our competitors in PCWorld/TechHive's most recent 20-market speed tests - the second consecutive year that AT&T has ranked first overall. PCWorld/TechHive also ranked AT&T's as the fastest combination of 3G and 4G services in the 20 cities it tested," the company stated, according to Fierce Telecom.
