KLM Airlines World Cup 2014: 'Mexicogate' Tweets Offend Actor Gael Garcia Bernal

Hollywood actor and Mexico native Gael Garcia Bernal posted angry tweets in response to KLM Airlines, which put up an insensitive message regarding the country's World Cup loss on Sunday.

The airline reportedly posted "Adios Amigos" with photos of a sombrero hat, moustache, and serape, after the squad's 2-1 loss against the Netherlands, according to The Guardian.

"I'm never flying your s***** airline again. F*** you big time," Bernal posted on his own Twitter account before retracting his thoughts.

"I must say this: apologies to anyone who felt offended by my comments. I was caught by the football bug that spoiled my sense of humor," confessed Bernal after the hashtag #mexiogate went viral.

KLM later stated that the tweet wasn't intended to hurt anyone.

"It was meant to be a joke," acknowledged Lisette Ebeling Koning, a KLM spokeswoman. "But there was too much negative reaction." The airline reportedly flies daily from Mexico City, and Amsterdam.

Mexico's home country airline, Aero Mexico also posted a message to show support for the team, nicknamed El Tricolor.

"Thank you for this great championship," the airline stated. "You've made us proud and we're waiting for you at home."

Delta was another airline criticized for a World Cup post, after tweeting a picture when the U.S. played against Ghana last week. The airline put up a photo of the Statue of Liberty and a giraffe - an animal that doesn't actually live in Ghana. This caused critics to accuse the airline of racism and ignorance. Delta officials eventually removed the images, then issued an apology on Twitter.

"We're sorry for our choice of photo in our previous tweet. Best of luck to all teams," the post read.

Ghana lost to Portugal 2-1 Thursday. The United States plays Belgium on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
