Switzerland earned a spot in the knockout round with two wins and one loss in the group stage. They head into Tuesday's contest as the underdogs, and their best chance of coming away with the upset is stopping Argentina star Lionel Messi - something Switzerland's manager is confident he can do.

"How to stop Messi? We'll show you tomorrow how we do it," Switzerland boss Ottmar Hitzfeld said, via FIFA.com. "Of course I've thought with the staff how to go on and continue to the quarter-finals - so I don't think it's going to be my last match. ...

"I think any defence will face problems when facing Messi. But problems are there to be solved. I trust my people, I trust my defence and the entire team. The entire team will have to perform, but I'm optimistic. I've had many challenges in my career."

Argentina, meanwhile, won all three group stage matches to qualify for the round of 16. Messi scored four of Argentina's six goals, evidence of how important the four-time FIFA Ballon d'Or winner is to the team's game.

"Messi's playing an amazing World Cup, that's what everybody expected," Argentina boss Alejandro Sabella said. "I expected it, so did his collegeaues and so did all Argentinians in general. So of course we're happy, we're happy for the team and for him as well.

"He's an important player for us. (Diego) Maradona was a very important player in that time and Messi is important as well."
