Sherlock to Return in 2015 with Season 4 and New Special (TWEETS)

Sherlock Holmes is back on another case.

The BBC reported "Sherlock" will return to the small screen in 2015. The hit BBC One series, which stars actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, will return for a special and three new episodes.

"A special, plus a new series of three episodes - it's a record-breaking run! Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect..." stated Steven Moffat, who is the series co-creator, writer and executive producer of the show.

Mark Gatiss, who is also serves as co-creator, writer and executive producer, added that the new episodes will put the main characters in "deeper and darker water than ever before."

"Series Four! It's always special to return to Sherlock but this time it's even more special as we're doing... a Special!" Gatiss said in a statement. "We'll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on - again!"

Production for the special is not expected to begin until January 2015, due to the series' main stars being tied to other projects. The three episodes will also begin production later next year. There is no word on when the episodes or the series will air.

"It's taken a little while to get the dates sorted as none of the boys are exactly sitting back twiddling their thumbs but there was unanimous goodwill to make this work, so we're thrilled that 221b is going to be inhabited again," executive producer Sue Vertue said in a statement.

Season three ended with Moriarty's face taking over every television screen.
