Nokia Acquires Network Deployment Expert SAC Wireless

Nokia Networks will take control of the US-based network deployment service provider SAC Wireless to help boost its presence in the network implementation market.

Nokia Networks, a multinational data networking and telecommunications equipment company, is reclaiming the mobile networking market in the United States. To beef up its efforts, Nokia's subsidiary has agreed to acquire SAC Wireless, based in Schaumburg, Illinois, so it can roll out new network contracts across the nation.

In the United States Nokia has a single contract of T-Mobile's LTE network, which is also in partnership with Ericsson. But the company is taking a new turn into mobile network solutions in the US with the SAC Wireless acquisition.

"This acquisition builds on our existing strengths and continued investment in our customers' success. Once the transaction has been completed, it will help us increase market share in the network implementation space," Ricky Corker, executive vice president of North America for Nokia Networks, said in a press release, Wednesday. "With SAC Wireless' capabilities complementing our own in-house expertise, we are well positioned to bring enhanced quality and increased end-to-end delivery efficiency to our customers. No other infrastructure provider is offering this level of proven services."

The financial records of the deal are under wraps. The deal is also subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, and the transaction is expected to conclude in the third quarter this year.

The acquisition of SAC Wireless, with an employee strength of 450 people, helps Nokia Networks fulfill the ongoing challenges with site acquisition, applying for permits and sub-contracting. This helps faster roll-out of 4G LTE networks and solving connectivity and bandwidth issues among other network-related things.

Nokia has long been trying hard to change its fortunes in the United States. It played a crucial role in Sprint's Spark LTE rollout, eliminating its rival Ericsson. In 2011, the company took over Motorola's network business to further enhance its relationships with carriers in the country, reports GigaOm.
