Katherine Heigl is spilling the ugly truth about her career, after reportedly being fired from ABC's "Grey's Anatomy".
In the August issue of Marie Claire U.K. the 35-year-old actress reveals why she felt betrayed, and how taking on so many romantic comedy roles derailed her career. Heigl starred in several romantic comedies including "27 Dresses," "The Ugly Truth," "Life as We Know It" and "New Year's Eve".
"I had an amazing time," Heigl told the magazine. "I love romantic comedies. But maybe I hit it a little too hard. I couldn't say no. There's nothing wrong with them, but maybe I overloaded my audience. I should have done a superhero movie or a psychological thriller."
Heigl added: "I stopped challenging myself. It became a bit by rote and, as a creative person that can wear you down. That was part of why I took that time off, to ask myself, 'What do I want? What am I looking for?' and shut down all the noise."
Heigl, who poses in a blue dress for the cover of the magazine, said she even considered quitting acting because she felt betrayed by Hollywood.
"The thing that was my best friend for a long time, [my career], suddenly turned on me and I didn't expect it," the actress said. "I was taken by surprise and angry at it for betraying me. I had a moment where, I don't know, I was thinking, 'Maybe open a knitting store, get my money out of retirement accounts and live off that, live off the land.' I had my moment where it all seemed so complicated and all I wanted to do was simplify."
At one point in her career, the mother of two was deemed as one of the most difficult actresses in Hollywood. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she often questioned the scripts of movies she was involved in.
Heigl now stars in NBC's new drama series "State of Affairs," in which she plays a CIA analyst. This is the actress' first television role since starring as Isabel Stevens in ABC's "Grey's Anatomy".
"I feel like I'm finally rolling into the next phase of my adulthood," she said. "We made a deal that we will only do 15 episodes a season, so I can go back to Utah and do all the things that inspire me.. There's a part of me that's a Hollywood animal as well. I can't wait to get into the writer's room and see how we do this. I feel like I'm finally rolling into the next phase of my adulthood."
