Chris Martin has changed more than his marital status this year.
During an interview with BBC Radio 2's "Steve Wright in the Afternoon" on Tuesday the Coldplay frontman revealed that he is no longer a vegetarian, following his split from Gwyneth Paltrow.
"Well, I eat meat," he explained. "I was vegetarian for quite a long time and then for various reasons I changed. My daughter's vegetarian since she was born, so I keep getting tempted to go back. I don't eat very much meat... "The honest answer why I changed is because I thought you can only eat something that you should be able to kill. I mean, could you kill a fish? I wouldn't like it, but I probably could eat the fish. But a giraffe."
Midway through his explanation, Martin joked: "I don't know why on earth we're talking about this. I've gotta stop talking - this will be some kind of headline."
The 37-year-old British singer/songwriter was labeled World's Sexiest Vegetarian in 2005 by PETA. Martin's ex-wife was famously known for her strict diet. In 2013, she revealed to The Guardian that she has not eaten red meat in nearly two decades.
"I hung out with Leonardo DiCaprio when I moved to New York and he was vegetarian, and he'd talk about how dirty meat is and how bad factory farming is," Paltrow explained. "I haven't eaten red meat in 20 years, and although Leo's not totally responsible, he definitely planted a seed... When I turned seriously macrobiotic, it coincided with my father having been diagnosed with cancer [in 1999]. I felt I could heal him by proxy."
Martin and Paltrow married in 2003 and have two children together, Apple and Moses, however the couple announced their separation in March.
In a blog post titled "conscious uncoupling," Paltrow admitted she and Martin tried to save their marriage for over a year. Paltrow added that despite their separation their main concern was the welfare of their children.
Post-split, Martin opened up about life as a single man, saying, "I feel so grateful. Especially over the last couple of years, music has been alchemizing. Going through something difficult in your life, music for me is always a friend and something that helps you to figure things out. That's always what I'm doing in the middle of the night. I'm very grateful to be here. Every day is a blessing. That's how I feel."
