Belgium hasn't been to the World Cup semifinals since 1986, according to FIFA.com, and has the opportunity to end their 28-year drought with a win on Saturday. While some view Argentina to be the favorite to win, Belgium boss Marc Wilmots believes his squad can win by being aggressive on the attack.
"We've studied their tactics and we'll stick to our style. We won't just defend," Wilmots said, via FIFA.com. "We play compact football and we don't leave a lot of space. We have to attack and defend together. It's all a matter of balance between attack and defence, but it's a quarter-final.
"We can write history. The players know this and we're going to play our own game."
Wilmots doesn't think it's just a matter of stopping Argentina star Lionel Messi, either.
"People tend to focus on Messi, and rightly so, but this morning I watched the Argentina-Switzerland match and the team is not just Lionel Messi. It's a whole," he said. "You have to reach a balance. At some points they left a few scoring opportunities for Switzerland, so things can change very quickly."
Argentina boss Alejandro Sabella acknowledged Belgium is a "powerful" team behind players such as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, right-back Toby Alderweireld and centre-back Vincent Kompany.
