Roger Federer has now joined the social media site, Twitter, and attracted more than 100,000 followers in just hours after his first tweet.
Roger Federer, one of the top three Swiss professional tennis players, has joined Twitter with a verified account, Thursday. He posted a picture of himself along with a tweet which reads "A little (blue) bird told me that the place to be is @twitter, so here I am!" which got more than 5,000 favorites and over 10,000 RT's. Tennis fans can now directly hear from the 17-time Grand Slam winner by following him on Twitter (@rogerfederer).
Federer quickly gained a huge fan following in just a few hours. Federer is already connected with his fans through his Facebook fan page, which has over 12 million fans. In just two hours after his first tweet, Federer gained more than 60,000 followers, surpassing 150,000 followers currently.
"an hour in @rogerfederer is pulling almost 24K followers an hour, at that rate he'll be at a million by Saturday lunch #goodnessgracious," @tennistweetscom tweet read.
With more than 150,000 fans following, Federer's first five follows are all four Slams: @ATPWorldTour, @AustralianOpen, @usopen, @Wimbledon and @rolandgarros.
Federer is obviously content with his new Twitter account and thanked all his fans in his second tweet.
"On my way to @rolandgarros , got practice and press on the agenda. Thanks for the warm welcome to @twitter," he wrote, Friday.
Federer will be playing in the 2013 French Open this summer at the Stade Roland Garros from 26 May to 9 June.
With Federer joining Twitter, only a handful of high-profile tennis champions including Ana Ivanovic and Sam Stosur, both Slam champions, continue to stay connected with their fans through Facebook.
