Emma Watson Named U.N. Goodwill Ambassador For Women, Actress Says She is 'Truly Humbled' by Opportunity

Emma Watson has a new role under her belt.

The Brown University graduate has been named the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women Division. The organization announced on Monday that the 24-year-old actress was awarded with the extreme honor.

The Huffington Post reported Watson is the first ambassador to be appointed to this branch under leader Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, who is the executive director and under-secretary-general of U.N. Women.

The actress will be responsible for enforcing women's empowerment and promoting gender equality. She will work for UN Women's HeForShe campaign, a movement which ask men and boys to help fight the inequalities women face around the world.

Watson called the opportunity "truly humbling."

"Women's rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can't imagine an opportunity more exciting," the actress said in a statement. "I still have so much to learn, but as I progress I hope to bring more of my individual knowledge, experience and awareness to this role."

The "Harry Potter" alum also tweeted to her 13 million Twitter about the good news on Monday, writing "So excited to start work with the AMAZING people at UN Women!"

In a statement, Mlambo-Ngcuka praised Watson, saying, "We are thrilled and honored to work with Emma, whom we believe embodies the values of UN Women."

She added: "The engagement of young people is critical for the advancement of gender equality in the 21st century, and I am convinced that Emma's intellect and passion will enable UN Women's messages to reach the hearts and minds of young people globally."

According to MSN Entertainment, the response surrounding Watson's new role was overwhelming - even causing major traffic on the U.N.'s website.

Watson recently visited Bangladesh and Zambia to promote education for young girls.
