Boston can split the four-game series against Chicago with a win Thursday afternoon. After dropping two-straight games to the White Sox, Boston bounced back on Wednesday with a 5-4 win. The Red Sox overcame a four-run deficit beginning in the eighth inning, ending with rookie Brock Holt driving in an RBI with a single.
"We were able to finish it off, which is something we haven't been able to do recently," Holt told the Associated Press. "So it's a good feeling."
After Chicago pulled starting pitcher Chris Sale in the eighth, Boston took the game over.
"Once we got Sale out of the game, then we were able to create opportunities," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "Tip your hat to a very, very good pitcher. But we didn't roll over by any means."
Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester (9-7, 2.73 ERA) starts Thursday. He didn't give up any earned runs in his last two outings, and he's coming off Saturday's 3-2 win over Baltimore.
"My fastball command has been pretty good," Lester told MLB.com. "I feel like I've gotten the consistency back with my cutter - which has been helpful at times, just getting it in on righties. All in all, I'm moving the ball around pretty well."
Lester will be opposed by Jose Quintana (5-7, 3.20), who's off a 10-strikeout game against Seattle that netted him a no-decision.
"I throw my pitches in the count, throw both sides, getting ahead in the count - it (becomes) more important inning by inning," Quintana said. "I keep going with that, it's the best thing for long games for me."
