Grab the Kleenex, because John Legend's latest video is a definite tear-jerker. The R&B crooner released his latest music video, "You & I (Nobody in the World)," on Thursday, July 10 and it's already generating a lot of buzz because of its deep and powerful meaning.
Legend is continuing his celebration of women's "imperfections" and used the video to honor all types of beauty. For four minutes women of different shapes, sizes and age groups stare at their reflections as they critique what they consider to be flaws.
"You fix your makeup, just so/Guess you don't know, that you're beautiful./Try on every dress that you own./You were fine in my eyes, a half hour ago./If your mirror won't make it any clearer/I'll be the one to let you know/Out of all the girls/You my one and only/Girl ain't nobody in the world tonight," Legend sings.
The video features a slew of unfamiliar faces but Legend's wife, model Chrissy Teigen, does a cameo as well as film writer Tig Notaro and transgendered actress and star of "Orange is the New Black" Laverne Cox. Some of the people in the video include: a pregnant lady and a woman who went bald from chemotherapy; a young girl with Down's Syndrome and a boxer with a bloodied nose; a woman who sobs at the scars and disfigurement left by a mastectomy and a nervous bride before she gets married.
In the end, Legend wants the women to know "you keep wondering if you're what I'm wanting/You don't even have to try." "You & I (Nobody in the World) is from the singer's latest album, "Love in the Future."
During an interview last year, the 35-year-old told Billboard that this album "has the feel of [his] first two albums - "Get Lifted" in 2004 and "Once Again" in 2006 - "but takes that sound forward."
In March, Legend said he thought "Love in the Future" was his greatest work to date.
"This is my best work yet, as a song writer, as a producer and an arranger. I feel like the team we had, that helped me make this album, Kanye [West], Dave, Tozer and several other great producers and co-writers, we just really made something special. It's a special time in my life. I released it right as I was about to get married. So a lot of good things are happening. It feels really good that the album is having so much success, after we put so much love into making it, he said.
