Fans of the Netflix original series “Orange is the New Black” can rest easy as reports indicating the show is cancelled are false.
Satirical website EmpireNews.net posted a story about the show being cancelled, including a fake statement from Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings.
“We regret to inform Netflix members that Orange is the New Black has been permanently cancelled. Also, starting September 1st, 2014, past episodes will no longer be available for streaming on Netflix,” the fake statement from Hastings read.
The site alleged there was tension between show creator Jenji Kohan and Hastings because the Netflix CEO wanted more male roles on the show. The story included a fake quote Hastings gave to a San Jose Mercury News reporter:
“A woman’s place is in the home, in the kitchen, taking care of children. A woman in jail? How does anyone even watch this show in the first place? It’s like we took everything bad about OZ, and make this show with the leftovers.”
The story went viral and many fans took to Twitter to express their unhappiness regarding the show’s sudden end.
However, Netflix took their Twitter account to respond to the rumors with a photo of Uzo Aduba and Danielle Brooks on set of season three. The Netflix original was renewed for a third season back in May.
Fans can also expect to see Laura Prepon in ever episode of the next season. Prepon had a scheduling conflict throughout filming of season two, but confirmed to The Daily Beast she’s worked out everything for season three.
"Basically, I wasn't a series regular and wasn't under contract, and then had a scheduling conflict that came up during Season 2," Prepon said. "But I love the show and I love my character, and I told Jenji from the get-go, ‘I want to be in as many as I can.’ So we did, and I'll be in four episodes for Season 2. And then if we get a Season 3, I'll be in every episode."
