A Hawaiian man accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend who vanished in February has been indicted for her murder, the Associated Press reported.
Steven Capobianco was indicted on charges of second-degree murder and arson by a Maui grand jury on Friday. A person close to the investigation told the AP that Capobianco, who is currently being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center on an unrelated charge, is expected to be re-arrested for the latest charge on Monday.
The victim, 27-year-old Carly Scott, was five months pregnant when she was last seen by her family at her sister's house in Haiku. The woman's dog was later found in the nearby community of Nahiku. Afterwards police began treating the missing person case as a homicide.
The torched remains of Scott's Toyota 4Runner was eventually found in a location north of Maui Island, but Scott's body was never found. Capobianco allegedly burned his ex-girlfriend's SUV in an attempt to cover up the murder.
Capobianco, who was the father of Scott's unborn baby, said he did see her the same night her family reported her missing, but that he did not kill her, according to Hawaii News Now.
The last time he saw Scott was when she gave him a ride to his pickup truck because the vehicle had broken down. Capobianco fixed the truck and then drove off with Scott following behind him, but somewhere along the way he could not see her anymore.
Capobianco said he assumed Scott arrived at her destination, according to the AP.
He was previously arrested on charges of terroristic threatening and prohibited deadly weapons. Bail for those charges was set at $500,000, but prosecutors are expected to ask for $2 million for the murder and arson charges.
The AP could not immediately reach the suspect or his lawyer for comment.
