Maybe Brooks Wheelan just wasn't funny enough.
The actor, who was hired by "Saturday Night Live" for the show's 39th season, will not return for Season 40, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The first year player announced on Twitter Monday that he was fired from the NBC series.
An SNL insider said the actor's contract was not renewed for another season and added that casting changes are normal. TheWrap reported Wheelan was given a one-year contract along with Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Mike O'Brien and Noel Wells - all of whom joined the comedy show for its 39th season.
Neither NBC nor SNL has released a statement on the recent casting shake-up. Other casting decisions are reportedly expected to be announced in August.
In June, SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels told Deadline that the show was in the middle of rebuilding after losing several major cast members.
"There will be changes this year," he told Deadline. "We lost four leading men at the end of last season, Fred [Armisen] and Bill [Hader] and Andy [Samberg] and Jason [Sudeikis], all of whom were very seasoned, very strong cast. We lost Kristen [Wiig] the year before. All have been here a long time, and you get used to how good people are."
