American League manager John Farrell announced Jeter, who has said he will retire after the season, will bat leadoff for the AL team on Tuesday. While he's certain to be greeted by a standing ovation, the 40-year-old veteran admitted he's tempered his emotions heading into his 14th and final All-Star Game.
"I don't know what tomorrow's going to be like," Jeter said, via ESPN. "I'm coming here, playing in the All-Star Game and trying to win for our league, because someone in this room is going to benefit. I don't go into things with expectations. I'm looking forward to playing the game and I've pretty much stopped right there.
"I think I've been pretty good at tempering my emotions over the course of my career."
For the American League, Farrell is most impressed by the depth of his team.
"I think any time you're surrounded by that caliber of players and you get the fortunate ability to see them across the field or compete on the same field with them, and to see them assembled in one clubhouse, it's a rare opportunity," Farrell said on Monday, via MLB.com. "But when you think about the depth -- and you look at a third baseman with Oakland who's hitting in the 8-hole who's got nearly 20 home runs -- just by position in the lineup, it reflects the caliber of players, the depth in it and the reserves will be coming in behind these guys are deserving to start in their own right. It's a rare and unique opportunity."
