Severe Water Shortage to Affect 50 Percent of World Population By 2050

The global population is estimated to reach nine billion by 2050 thus resulting to severe water shortage as the supply may not be enough. The scientists appeal to the leaders of the countries to start implementing more effective measures to conserve water for the future.

Professor Janor Bogardi of Bonn University, Germany said in an interview with The Independent that different human activities has speed up the natural environmental processes that counteracts with the production of water. This will worsen until 2050 unless necessary measures to alleviate the issue are made.

37 years from now, humans will suffer from water shortage due to negligence, waste and climate change. The consequence is considered long term especially if no one will evaluate and take action on the current issues. The water researchers are here just to provide the analysis and recommendations but the implementation must be a global effort.

The human beings can influence the global water system significantly especially in conservation. Humans can ensure that water reservoirs are maintained, pollution is scaled down, and marine creatures are protected.

The issue about the impending water shortage was brought up in a meeting by the Global Water System Project. They presented different factors that could curb human development in the 21st century and one of them is water shortage.

The scientists handling the project concluded that the world will change a lot because of the increased water consumption of the current generation. However, they clarified that they cannot fully predict the accuracy as there are other possible catastrophic events that may alter their prediction. They may be proven wrong if the human beings start conserving water now.

The world celebrates Water Day every March 22 since 1993 to remind everyone of the importance of water. However, everyone should remember that water conservation is a daily responsibility.
