Xbox One vs. PS4: Microsoft Announces Next-Gen Consoles Sales Doubled In June, But Is It Enough To Top Sony?

Microsoft has announced their Xbox One sales have doubled in June compared to previous months.

The company did not release sales figures with the statement, but claims June was a great sales month in the United States. Microsoft released an unbundled Xbox One in June without the Kinect for $399, which was $100 less than the original price and matched the price of the PlayStation 4.

“Over the past month, we’ve seen a strong spike in interest in our Xbox One console options, including the new $399 offering, and the amazing lineup of games announced during E3,” Microsoft said in a news release. “Since the new Xbox One offering launched on June 9th, we’ve seen sales of Xbox One more than double in the US, compared to sales in May, and solid growth in Xbox 360 sales.”

The news comes after IGN reports the Sony’s PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PS Vita have sold a combined 100 million units. The report claimed the PS3 made up for 80 million of the unit sales, with the PS vita selling more than 10 million and the PS4 close behind with an estimated 8 million units sold.

Sony’s next-gen console continues to out-sell the Xbox One, Forbes reports. However, the console war is not over. EA COO Peter Moore recently explained to GamesIndustry.biz why the console war needs to exist and how it helps propel the success of game publishers.

"Consumers love it as well, and it's good for the industry," Moore said. "You need powerful companies like Sony and Microsoft to be battling out with each other because it drives investment in their platforms. It drives competition. You want to see Nintendo come back with the Wii U. All in all, it becomes healthy for gamers, for the environment. When you have a runaway winner, that actually has a reverse effect."
