Tiger Woods made a late push Friday to make the cut at the 2014 British Open Championship. Woods avoided elimination after a difficult afternoon by birdying on the 18th hole to get two over.
Woods struggled for much of Friday, and he didn't get his first birdy until the final hole of the second round.
Per Reuters:
"The 14-times major champion dropped three strokes at the opening two holes before slumping to a triple-bogey seven at the 17th.
Woods then produced a delicate chip over a greenside bunker at the last hole and calmly rolled in a seven-foot putt to complete a five-over-par round of 77 and a total of 146, two over."
Woods acknowledged he could have played better.
"I got myself in good positions to make birdies but didn't make them," he told reporters, via Reuters.
Asked how he would fare this weekend, Woods said: "It all depends on the weather."
Heavy rains are forecasted for Saturday, which will make things more difficult for the 38-year-old. Woods is playing in just his second tournament since undergoing back surgery on March 31, although he's confident he has a chance to win the tournament.
"I knew I could do I do it," Woods said Thursday after the first round, via ESPN. "That's why I was telling you guys it was so important for me to play at Congressional. The fact that I was able to recover every day, and the fact that I was stronger, more explosive the more days I played.
"I'm only going to get better from that point. And I'm getting stronger, I'm getting faster, I'm getting more explosive. The ball is starting to travel again. And those are all positive things."
