Facebook has launched a new iOS mobile app called "Mentions" that is exclusively available to celebrities and influencers on the site.
Facebook, the world's largest social networking site, is offering an exclusive treat for a limited group of its most famous users. The company launched a new iPhone app called "Mentions" for verified public figures on the site such as actors, athletes, musicians and government officials.
Mentions app brings a seamless connection between celebrities and fans. Verified public figures can use the app to track conversations, share updates, post photos, videos and host live Q&A sessions, all from within their mobile phones. It is a way to boost celebs' social interactions with the fans and make them more accessible.
"Nearly 800 million people are connected to public figures on Facebook, and interacting with athletes, musicians, actors and other influencers is an important part of their experience," Facebook Product Manager Allison Swope wrote in a blog postWednesday. "From cheering on World Cup players to checking out updates from favorite celebrities, there are more than a billion interactions between public figures and their fans on Facebook every week."
The Mentions app is available only for accounts with verified pages in the US, but the social network site is looking to expand to other parts of the world in the coming months. Admin of verified pages can also use the app to connect with Facebook users and manage account seamlessly by requesting access to the app.
The company also added a new "Buy" button for ads so users aren't required to leave the site to complete a purchase of an advertised product.
Meanwhile, public figures with verified accounts can download Mentions for iPhone from App Store.
