BREAKING: Actor James Garner of 'Maverick' and 'The Notebook' Has Died at 86

James Garner, a long-time film and television actor notable for his easy-going charm and chisled good looks has died at age 86, according to Los Angeles police officials. Garner is remembered best for roles as a beloved ex-con who turned private eye in television's "Maverick" and in feature films like "The Notebook" and "Murphy's Law" for which he was nominated for an Oscar.

He died of natural causes in his Brentwood, Los Angeles home on Saturday evening, police officer Alonzo Iniquez told the Associated Press, but no further details are available. The actor had suffered from various ailments over the years, including a stroke in 2008, three years after winning the Screen Actor's Guild's prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

Upon accepting the awards – and in typical Garner fashion – the actor smiled and quipped, "I'm not at all sure how I got here."

An Oklahoma native and Korean War veteran, Garner was a natural for the western-themed productions that brought him fame.
